When it comes to general heating applications, it is not the performance in kW that determines the size of the heat exchanger, but the permissible pressure drop. This is because the applications exhibit a low NTU. Other factors that determine the size include the approach temperature and the plate material selected for the heat exchanger.

The functionality of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is very effective: it consists of a hollow cylinder inside which the so-called tube bundle – a multitude of tubes of small diameter – is located. The tube bundle transports the one medium, the cylinder the other. The heat exchange takes place indirectly through a tube wall, which prevents the exchange of substances.

Pressure vessels and pressure vessel systems must be inspected before initial operation as well as periodically according to the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. The periodic inspection in regard to imperviousness and damage is indispensable. Furthermore, they are subject to the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) with a maximum permissible operating pressure of 0.5 bar.

Moreover, employees should be made aware of the dangers of handling pressure vessels and prepared for possible emergency situations in a training. That includes wearing safety-related gear.
